This is a very scarce crinoid that we recently obtained from a major crinoid collection. It is a huge Anobasicrinus brevis from the Pennsylvanian strata near Pontiac, Illinois. This crinoid was collected many years ago - the site has been closed for at least 25 years. Even when this site was open to collecting, very few specimens of this crinoid were found. This crinoid has a bowl-shaped cup comprised of robust plates and extremely stout, multi-branching uniserial arms. The plate structure of this specimen is well defined - the individual plates are easily seen. A portion of the round stem is still tightly attached to the cup. The off-white color of the fossil contrasts well with the gray matrix. This is a fine example of this unusual crinoid from one of the most renowned Pennsylvanian localities in the world.
