This is a very displayable crinoid holdfast associated with other fossils from the Waldron Shale of Indiana. The quarry where this specimen was found is now filled with water and closed to collecting. This large holdfast is extremely 3-dimensional and exhibits wonderful detail. The stem attachment point is easily seen, and the branching "roots" are beautifully displayed. There are also many other fossils on the plate. A cephalon of the rare Dalmanites trilobite is present - even the eyes of the trilobite are intact. A couple of unidentified brachiopods, several crinoid stems, and two examples of a colonial coral are also on the slab. All of these fossils are natural to the plate - they are not composited. The fossils have great color and contrast and are well centered on the rectangular plate. This is one of the most aesthetic examples we have seen of a crinoid holdfast from the Silurian sea.
