This is an extremely rare plate of crinoids from the Pennsylvanian layers near Pontiac, Illinois. This locality has been closed to collecting for almost 25 years. Even when this site was open to collecting, this particular crinoid was an extremely rare find. Less than a dozen of these crinoids were probably found at this location - and a double is almost unheard of. This type of crinoid has a low, bowl-shaped cup with long, uniserial arms. The crinoids on this specimen are quite 3-dimensional and exhibit good detail. The plate structure is easily seen, and the long anal tubes are clearly evident. The pinkish-white color of the crinoids contrasts nicely with the gray matrix. The echinoderms are well positioned on the natural plate of shale. This is not the most aesthetic crinoid specimen from Pontiac, but it is one of the rarest we have ever been able to offer.
