Here is a very pretty crinoid. This is an extremely well preserved example of Corythocrinus sp. from the Mississippian of Indiana. This inadunate crinoid has a cone-shaped cup with highly sculpted plates. The long, multi-branching arms are uniserial in nature and composed of many wedge-shaped plates. It is highly uncommon to find this crinoid with the arms so fully intact. Usually they are missing in part or broken off short. This specimen even retains a portion of the stem tightly attached to the cup. The cream-colored fossil contrasts nicely with the gray matrix. It is almost perfectly centered on the rectangular plate of siltstone. This is a wonderful specimen of this unusually complete crinoid.
