Here is an extremely rare crinoid that we recently acquired from a major echinoderm collection. This is Haeretocrinus wagneri from the Pennsylvanian of Illinois. This locality has been closed to collecting for almost 25 years. Even when this site was open to collecting, this particular crinoid was an extremely rare find. This inadunate crinoid has a large, cone-shaped cup and very stout uniserial arms. This robust crinoid has been removed from the surrounding matrix so that the plate structure of the entire cup can be easily seen. The crown is very 3-dimensional and exhibits great detail - the plate structure is beautifully defined, and the branching pattern of the arms is quite evident. The off-white color of the crinoid is quite striking. This is an exciting specimen of a very scarce crinoid from one of the most famous Pennsylvanian echinoderm sites in the world.
