This is a large crinoid holdfast (root system) on a huge plate of limestone. The quarry where this specimen was found was filled with water. This holdfast is well preserved and exhibits fine detail. The central stem is easily seen, and the roots seem to keep branching and branching - the rootlets go on down to the very tiny tips. The holdfast has very good color and contrast (better than the picture shows) and is well showcased on the huge matrix block that also contains a partial trilobite and many other fossils. This is a top quality crinoid holdfast preserved with many other Silurian fossils.
