Here is a spectacular specimen of Stenopecrinus sp. from the Pennsylvanian of Illinois. We recently acquired this specimen from a major crinoid collection. This specimen was collected in the early 1970s - this location has been closed and filled with water for the last 25 plus years. This crinoid is very 3-dimensional. The sea lily displays excellent plate structure, and the multi-branching arms have large spikes preserved and are very tightly articulated (unusual for this location). This crinoid has the anal sec terminate into an "umbrella" on top of the crinoid. The coolest feature about this crinoid is that the "unbrella" has a starburst of long spikes on top, and looks like the sun! The other feature is the gastropod that is attached - this is rare for this type. The pinkish-white color of the fossil contrasts nicely with the grey-green matrix. It has been said by experts that the crinoids from this site may be the best Pennsylvanian crinoids in the world. This is a very collectible,  impressive specimen of this extremely rare, spiny Pontiac crinoid.
