This is an extremely displayable crinoid that we recently obtained from a major collection. It is a large Platycrinites saffordi from the Mississippian of Indiana. This type of camerate crinoid has a large cup with multi-branching, biserial arms. This specimen is very 3-dimensional and exhibits exquisite detail. The plate structure of the crinoid is easily seen, and the arms are well-preserved in a somewhat ''splayed'' position. The fine pinnules of the arms are clearly defined, and an extremely long, twisted stem (indicative of the genus) is still tightly attached to the cup. The gracefully-curving, ''corkscrew'' stem is unusually complete and quite long. The fossil has exceptional color and contrast and is beautifully centered on the somewhat rectangular plate of siltstone. This is a stunning specimen of an aesthetic crinoid with the long stem wonderfully intact.
