This is an uncommon crinoid from the Burlington Formation of Missouri. It is a nice Dorycrinus missouriensis, one of the most highly collectible crinoids to be found in the Burlington Formation. This particular crinoid is rare, and to find one that is this displayable is extremely rare. This type of crinoid has five long spines radiating from the tegmen, which may have been used for defensive purposes. Three of these spines are beautifully displayed, two having been prepared in a full free-standing manner. These long spines are quite formidible, to say the least. The 3-dimensional, white crinoid contrasts beautifully with the orangish-brown matrix that is a virtual coquina of crinoid fragments. This is a displayable specimen of this very unusual spiny crinoid from Missouri.
