Here is a very interesting fossil. It is a crinoid holdfast and gastropod from the Silurian of Indiana. The quarry where this specimen was found was filled with water and closed to collecting all summer. This holdfast is very 3-dimensional and exhibits great detail. The stem attachment point is easily seen, and the branching pattern of the rootlets is clearly defined. But the strangest feature is that the crinoid had clearly ''rooted'' itself to the surface of the gastropod! We've never seen anything quite like this. This is a distinct example of a crinoid holdfast attached to a gastropod from the Waldron Shale.
