This is a very aesthetic crinoid. It is a fine Macrocrinus mundulus crown from the famous Mississippian layers near Crawfordsville, Indiana. This distinct specimen was recently acquired from a major fossil collection. This type of Camerate crinoid has a large cup composed of many plates and biserial arms that contain many pinnules. This specimen is well articulated and exhibits fine detail. The plate structure of the cup is quite evident, and the arms are beautifully displayed. Part of an articulated stem is still tightly attached to the cup of the crinoid, and the anal tube can be seen extending above the tips of the arms. The sea lily has good natural color and contrast and is well centered on the rectangular plate of siltstone. This is a very nice example of a classic crinoid from an old collection.
