Here is an unusual specimen from the DeRosear Collection. There is a beautiful crinoid and a rare brittlestar on this large plate from the famous Mississippian layers of Crawfordsville, Indiana. The long-stemmed, 3-dimensional crinoid is a gorgeous example of Abrotocrinus coreyi. This inadunate crinoid has a small, bowl-shaped cup and slender, multi-branching, uniserial arms. The arms are complete to the very tips and display the fine pinnules in wonderful fashion. An extremely long (over 8 inches!) stem is still tightly attached to the cup. A scarce, five-armed brittlestar, Aganaster sp., is also on the plate. The large central disc and the arms of the brittlestar are easily seen. The crinoid is almost perfectly centered on the large, rectangular plate of matrix that is loaded with other crinoid fragments. Unfortunately, the picture does not highlight the incredible detail and true beauty of the crinoid and brittlestar. This is a great example of Abrotocrinus that just happens to have an unusual brittlestar on the same plate.
