Here is a spectacular specimen of one of the most sought-after types of crinoids. This is Dorycrinus gouldi from the famous crinoid beds of Crawfordsville, Indiana. This particular camerate crinoid has a large, bulbous-plated cup and somewhat slender, biserial arms. However, the distinctive feature of this crinoid is the spines. This species has many spines emanating from the tegmen - the LONG spines are wonderfully intact and prepared free-standing on this specimen! This large crinoid is well preserved and extremely 3-dimensional. It has been prepared in high relief so that it stands above the surface of the matrix. The detail of the feathery arms is simply superb. The fossil has exceptional color and contrasts beautifully with the colorful matrix block. The ornate crinoid is nicely showcased on the natural plate of siltstone. This is a very showy specimen of this highly collectible ''spiny'' crinoid.
