Here is a spectacular specimen of Stellarocrinus virgilensis from the Pennsylvanian of Illinois. We recently acquired this specimen from a major crinoid collection. This specimen was collected in the early 1970s - this location has been closed and filled with water for the last 20 plus years. This crinoid is very 3-dimensional. It displays excellent plate structure - the plates comprising the small cup are extremely nodose and stellate. The biserial arms have large spikes preserved and are very tightly articulated (unusual for this location) and curl inward at the top of the crown. The spiked anal tube extends above the arms and a GASTROPOD is attached to the anal opening. The pinkish-white color of the fossil contrasts nicely with the grey-green matrix. It has been said by some that the crinoids from this site may be the best Pennsylvanian crinoids in the world. This is an impressive specimen of this classic Pontiac crinoid.
