Anyone who knows anything about crinoids should recognize this gem. This is a spectacular Stellarocrinus virgilensis from the Pennsylvanian strata near Pontiac, Illinois that we recently obtained from a major echinoderm collection. This large crinoid was collected many years ago - the site has been closed to collecting for 25 years. This type of crinoid has a shallow, bowl-shaped cup with highly sculpted plates and very stout, biserial arms. There are short spikes or protuberances randomly positioned on the arms - perhaps some sort of defense mechanism. This crinoid is still encased in matrix, which is somewhat unusual - most have been found ''popped out'' of the rock matrix. This echinoderm is very 3-dimensional and exhibits wonderful detail. The plate structure is beautifully displayed - the individual plates of the crinoid are easily seen. The stem is even preserved, which, again is quite unusual. The pinkish-white color of the fossil is totally natural and contrasts beautifully with the green matrix plate that also contains other crinoid stems. This is an outstanding example of Stellarocrinus from a classic, closed location.
