Here is a fabulous Ordovician crinoid from an unusual location. This is Heterocrinus sp. from Swatara Gap, Pennsylvania. This site is well-known for the Cryptolithus trilobites and the occasional starfish that is found, but does not have the reputation as a major crinoid-producing area. In fact, complete crinoids from this location are quite rare. This crinoid has fantastic detail - the individual arms are easily seen. An extremely long portion of the stem is still intact, which is also very hard to find. The orange fossil contrasts beautifully with the dark sandstone matrix. This is a very collectible crinoid from the classic Swatara Gap locality.
