This is a special crinoid fossil. It is a large (almost four inches long!) Parulocrinus pontiacensis from the Pennsylvanian strata near Pontiac, Illinois. The quarry where this crinoid was found has been filled with water and closed to collecting for many years. Many experts agree that this site produced the finest Pennsylvanian crinoids in the world. Even when collecting was allowed, this was a very difficult crinoid to find. Usually, only the cup of this crinoid was found. This type of crinoid has a very robust, bowl-shaped cup with stout, biserial arms. This 3-dimensional specimen exhibits these features in fine fashion. The pinnulation of the arms is beautifully displayed, and the individual plates of the arms are quite distinct. The heavy arms are even present on the back side of the specimen (pictured). The natural, pinkish-white color of the echinoderm is quite striking. This is a very large and very collectible specimen of one of the rarest crinoids to be found at this renowned location.
