This is an incredible specimen of the Devonian crinoid, Arthroacantha, from the classic Sylvania, Ohio location. Although this site is famous for its Phacops trilobites, occasionally a crinoid is unearthed. This striking specimen is very 3-dimensional and is replaced by golden pyrite. The detail of the arms is excellent, and the long stem is still attached. But that's not all - there is a large gastropod, Platyceras(?), attached smack-dab in the center of the display side of the cup. This spiny gastropod fed off the excrement from the crinoid, and in doing so, kept the environment clean so that the crinoid could keep living. This is a rare example of a true symbiotic relationship in the fossil record - a very rare occurrence in the Devonian. The fossil is wonderfully showcased on the large, natural block of Silica Shale. This is a very unique crinoid and gastropod association that just happens to display beautifully.
