Here is a large crinoid from a location that is now closed to collecting. This is Cactocrinus imperator from the Mississippian of Iowa. This location closed its doors to collecting when someone drove their car over the wall of the quarry. This specimen was recently acquired from a major crinoid collection. This fossil sea lily is very 3-dimensional and exhibits fine detail. The camerate crinoid has a big, stellate-plated cup and long, stout biserial arms that show distinct pinnulation. The arms are preserved in a textbook splayed position, making for a wonderful display. A lengthy articulated stem is still attached to the cup. The gorgeous creamish-brown crinoid contrasts nicely with the grey matrix. The fossil is well centered on the semi-oval plate of limestone. This is a beautiful example of a large Cactocrinus from a famous closed location.
