This is an unusual-looking crinoid. It is a fine Gilbertsocrinus dispanus from the Mississippian layers near Crawfordsville, Indiana. This unusual type of camerate crinoid has five, long, multi-branching appendages emanating from the tegmen that recurve wonderfully over the spiked cup. All of the appendages are present on this specimen and are beautifully displayed. Many of the tiny, uniserial arms are preserved and easily seen. This 3-dimensional crinoid has superb color and contrast and is well centered on the squared plate of siltstone. This is one of the more ornate and striking types of crinoids from Crawfordsville, and this specimen showcases these features wonderfully.
