This is a huge crinoid holdfast from the Silurian of Indiana. The quarry where this specimen was found is now filled with water and closed to collecting. This holdfast is well preserved and exhibits fine detail. The central stem is easily seen, and the roots seem to keep branching and branching - the roots seem to go on forever, right down to the very tiny tips. The fossil has good color and contrast (better than the picture shows) and is well centered on the light-colored matrix that also contains other fossil fragments. This is a very large crinoid holdfast from a closed locality.
