Here is a wonderful plate of crinoids from LeGrand, Iowa, one of the most famous crinoid sites in the world. This specimen was found in the 1930s and recently obtained from a major crinoid collection. Crinoids from LeGrand are perhaps the most sought-after crinoids in the world, and an interesting feature about the crinoids from this site is that the different species of crinoids are different colors. This plate contains five crinoids - the large, white crinoid in the middle of the slab is Platycrinites symmetricus. This specimen displays the some of the twisted, convoluted stem that is typical of the genus. The plate structure of the cup is very good, and the biserial arms display the fine pinnules. The other darker crinoids on the plate are Rhodocrinus sp. and Aorocrinus immaturus. These specimens also exhibit great detail. The very fine pinnulation of the arms is quite evident, and most of the crinoids still have some stem attached. The crinoids are very 3-dimensionally preserved and have great natural color and contrast. The limestone matrix plate also contains numerous bryozoans and crinoid stems. This is a very collectible slab of crinoids from this classic location.
