Here is a spectacular crinoid. This is Parascytalocrinus validus from the Mississippian of Crawfordsville, Indiana. This type of crinoid has a small, bowl-shaped cup and long, thin, uniserial arms. This specimen exhibits these features in wonderful fashion. The long stem is attached, and the arms are very well preserved and display the fine pinnules beautifully. But the really unique feature of this crinoid is that it has at least one regenerated arm! The arm second from the bottom was broken off or eaten, and it grew a thinner replacement arm out of the stump end! This is a very unusual occurrence in the fossil record, and extremely rare to have one this noticeable. This is a museum quality crinoid with a very unique story to tell.
