This is a very nice crinoid from an unusual location. It is a Synbathocrinus sp. from the Keokuk Formation of Missouri. This particular genus of crinoid is characterized by a small cone-shaped cup with only five, long, unbranching, uniserial arms. This crinoid is 3-dimensionally preserved and exhibits fine detail - the plate structure is clearly defined, and the arms are unusually complete to the very tips. A portion of the round stem is still tightly attached to the cup. The crinoid has wonderful color and contrast and is beautifully centered on the somewhat rectangular plate of matrix. This is an excellent example of this primitive-looking crinoid from the Mississippian.
