This is an extremely rare crinoid. It is an Uperocrinus marinus from the Mississippian of Indiana. This type of camerate crinoid has a large cup composed of many plates and unbranching, biserial arms. But the most diagnostic feature of this unusual crinoid is the long anal tube with many radiating spikes! All of these features are clearly defined on this specimen. The ''sea lily'' is quite 3-dimensional and exhibits excellent detail. The plate structure of the cup is easily seen, and the tiny plates of the arms are clearly defined. The anal tube extends above the arms and eight long, pointed spikes are beautifully displayed near the tops of the arms! A section of round stem is still tightly attached to the cup of the crinoid. The crinoid has fantastic color and contrast and is wonderfully presented on the sculpted block of siltstone. This is a highly collectible specimen of, perhaps, the most sought-after crinoid from Crawsfordsville.
