This is a very attractive crinoid. It is a Platycrinites saffordi from the famous Mississippian deposits near Crawfordsville, Indiana. This type of camerate crinoid has a cup composed of large, ornamented plates and heavily pinnulated, biserial arms. This 3-dimensional specimen exhibits all of these features in fine fashion. The plate structure of the crinoid is clearly defined, and the long arms, with their many pinnules, are beautifully displayed. The twisted stem (indicative of the genus) is still tightly attached to the base of the cup. The fossil has been prepared in high relief and appears to be ''floating'' above the matrix. The crinoid has great color and contrast and is wonderfully centered on the rectangular plate of siltstone. This is an excellent specimen of Platycrinites saffordi.
