Here is a nice crinoid specimen that we recently obtained from an old collection. This is an uncommon Tholocrinus unionensis from the Mississippian. This crinoid was collected many years ago in the Chesterian Beds near Anna, Illinois. This site has been closed to collecting for a number of years. This type of crinoid has a shallow, bowl-shaped cup with stout, multi-branching, uniserial arms. This crinoid has robust spines emanating from the cup, and the top of the anal tube also exhibits two spines. A long, articulated stem is still tightly attached to the base of the crinoid. The echinoderm has very good color and contrast and is well centered on the rectangular plate of limestone that is loaded with bryozoans. This is a fine example of this unusual crinoid from the Fraileys Formation.
