Here is a gorgeous example of one of the most sought-after crinoids from Indiana. This is Dorycrinus gouldi from the Mississippian. This particular camerate crinoid has a large, bulbous-plated cup and somewhat slender, biserial arms. However, the distinctive feature of this crinoid is the spines. This species has five long spines emanating from the tegmen and protruding between the arms. This specimen is beautifully preserved and extremely 3-dimensional. It has been prepared in high relief so that it stands well above the surface of the matrix. The plate structure of the robust cup is superb and almost all of the arms are complete to the very tips - even the small pinnules of the arms are intact. Four of the five spines are beautifully displayed - the remaining spine remains embedded in the rock. A long, articulated stem is still attached to the crinoid and aesthetically curved on the matrix. There has been NO RESTORATION OR COMPOSITING done to this impeccable specimen. Everything you see is real - even the tips of the spines. The fossil has exceptional color and contrasts nicely with the light-colored matrix. It is wonderfully positioned on the rectangular plate of siltstone. This is a very exciting specimen of this unusual, highly collectable crinoid. This crinoid should make someone very happy. By the way, there is also a Cyathocrinites sp., complete with stem, on the plate.
