Here is a crinoid from a site that has been closed for at least 18 years. This site has been proclaimed by many to produce the best Pennsylvanian crinoids in the world. We recently acquired this crinoid from a major Midwest collection. It is a very rare specimen of Clathrocrinus clathratus. This genus was extremely difficult to find even when the site was collectible. The crinoid is inflated and exhibits fine detail. The plate structure of the cup is well defined. Please notice the strange zig-zag pattern of the arms. A delicate touch of stem is still attached to the cup. This crinoid has beautiful color (pinkish) and contrasts nicely with the gray matrix. There is also a pygidium of an unusual trilobite, Ditomopyge olsoni, sitting next to the crinoid. Trilobite remains are rare at this site. The fossils are almost perfectly centered on the squared piece of matrix. This is a very fine example of this extremely rare Pennsylvanian crinoid.
