Here is an unusual crinoid from Anna, Illinois. This is Cosmetocrinus sp. from the Fraileys Formation. This site has been closed to collecting for a number of years. This inadunate crinoid has a very small cup and long, uniserial arms that branch several times. This specimen exhibts fine detail - the plate structure is well defined and the arms display many of the small pinnules. The cream-colored "sea lily" contrasts nicely with the yellowish matrix. It is well positioned on the natural plate of shale that is loaded with bryozoans. This is a very good example of this unusual crinoid from a site that is no longer collectable.
