This is a great specimen of Platycrinites hemisphericus from the Edwardsville Formation of Indiana. This large crinoid is very 3-dimensional and exhibits wonderful preservation. The long, biserial arms are more complete than most specimens of this species and show outstanding detail. The multitudinous pinnules are beautifully exposed. The highly ornamented cup is wonderfully displayed and a portion of the stem is still attached. Attached to the cup is a large Platyceras gastropod. This gastropod, in life, affixed itself to the living crinoid and fed off the excrement from the echinoderm. In doing so, it cleaned up the environment so the crinoid could keep living. This is a terrific example of a symbiotic relationship in the fossil record. The fossils have great color and contrast. They are well centered on the somewhat rounded plate of matrix. This is a very unique crinoid specimen from the Mississippian.
