Here is an interesting plate of crinoids from the Mississippian of Missouri. On the left is a large section of a crinoid holdfast. One can easily see where the cirri attached to the main stem. In the middle of the plate is a fine specimen of Uperocrinus pyriformis. This crinoid has a long, smooth-plated cup and a very nodose tegmen. The crinoid on the right is Physetocrinus ventricosus. This specimen exhibits a stellate-plated cup and an almost flat tegmen comprised of many, many small plates. The fossils are very 3-dimensional and exhibit fine detail. The whitish color of the fossils contrasts nicely with the orangish-brown matrix. There are many other crinoid fragments present on the plate. This is a very nice display specimen of crinoids from the Burlington Formation.
