This is a very large specimen of Dorycrinus mississippiensis from the Mississippian of Missouri. Although this particular species is one of the diagnostic crinoids from the Keokuk Formation, it is not a common find. This specimen was recently acquired from an old collection. This specimen has been removed from the surrounding matrix, so that it can be viewed from all angles. This crinoid is preserved in an extremely 3-dimensional manner. The bottom (cup) of the calyx exhibits very rugose plates, while the tegmen displays very smooth plates. This type of crinoid had five long spines radiating outward from the periphery of the tegmen. This example shows three partial spines. The stem and arm attachment areas are easily seen. This is a good example of this unusual crinoid from Missouri.
