Here is an outstanding specimen of an unusual crinoid. This is Eratocrinus coxanus from the Warsaw Formation of Illinois. This inadunate crinoid has a small, bowl-shaped cup and multi-branching, uniserial arms. The plate structure of this 3-dimensional specimen is clearly defined and the tightly-compacted arms are complete to the very tips. An extremely long, articulated stem is still tightly attached to the crinoid. This graceful stem even displays some of the cirri as it aesthetically winds its way toward the bottom of the plate. The cream-colored crinoid contrasts nicely with the tannish-gray matrix. It is almost perfectly centered on the large, rectangular plate of siltstone. This is one of the most attractive examples of Eratocrinus coxanus that we have ever seen.
