Here is an excellent plate of different echinoderms that we recently acquired in an old collection. This plate from the Mississippian of Illinois contains a very rare echinoid and two different crinoids. At the top of the plate is a unique specimen of Lepidocidaris shumardiana. This primitive echinoid has very thin plates with large tubercles (the spine attachment points) wonderfully displayed. A beautiful specimen of Taxocrinus sp. is centered on the slab. This flexible crinoid is an unusual find from this site. All of the arms are intact and wonderfully curled in at the top. A long, articulated stem is tightly attached to this crinoid. A camerate crinoid is directly below the Taxocrinus crown. This crinoid has a multi-plated cup with biserial arms, similar to Carabocrinus. The fossils have nice color and contrast. They are extremely well centered on the rectangular plate of siltstone. This is a great example of an "early" echinoid associated with two crinoids from the Warsaw Formation.
