Here is an interesting plate of fossils from the Mississippian of Illinois. On the lower left of the plate is a very nice, unidentified inadunate crinoid. This specimen shows good plate structure. The branching of the arms is well defined. Directly above this crinoid is a specimen of Phanocrinus bellulus. Near the center of the slab is a large Phanocrinus formosus. This crinoid exhibits a small cup with long, stout, uniserial arms. On the right side of the plate is a very nice example of Archimedes sp., a strange, cork-screw shaped bryozoan. All of these fossils are very 3-dimensional. The light-colored crinoids and the dark Archimedes contrast nicely with the yellowish matrix. The slab is littered with flat, net-like bryozoan colonies. There are also crinoid fragments and a brachiopod on the plate. This is a very interesting assemblage of fossils from the Mississippian sea floor.
