Here is an extremely rare crinoid. This is Haeretocrinus wagneri from the Pennsylvanian of Illinois. We recently acquired this specimen from a major crinoid collection. This specimen was collected in the early 1970s. This location has been closed and filled with water for the last 20 plus years. Even when this site was open to collecting, this particular crinoid was an extremely rare find. The crinoid has fantastic detail. The plate structure of the cup is well defined. The robust, uniserial arms are well displayed. A section of the stem is retained by the crinoid crown. But the most striking feature of this crinoid is the large, extremely nodose anal tube which extends above the arms and flows down the back side of the crinoid (see picture). The crinoid has beautiful color and contrast. This is a specimen that will be almost impossible to replace as time goes by.
