Here is an unusual crinoid from the Upper Burlington Formation. This is Cactocrinus obesus from the Mississippian of Illinois. This type of crinoid has very protruding plates in the cup and tegmen. This specimen is very 3-dimensional and exhibits fine detail. The plate structure is well defined and the arm attachment points are easily seen. There is also a large blastoid, Schizoblastus sayi, on the plate. This inflated blastoid, a top view, shows the thin ambulacra quite nicely. The whitish-colored fossils contrast wonderfully with the orangish matrix that contains many other crinoid fragments. They are well positioned on the somewhat rectangular block of limestone. This is a very fine specimen of a two different echinoderms from the Upper Burlington Formation.
