This is a beautiful specimen from the world-famous Crawfordsville, Indiana location. The main crinoid on the plate is Platycrinites hemisphericus. This crinoid is extremely 3-dimensional and exhibits fabulous detail. The cup is highly ornamented. The long, branching arms display the fine pinnules. Attached to the side of the cup is a large Platyceras gastropod. This snail fed on the excrement produced by the crinoid. In doing so, it cleaned up the environment for the crinoid, so the crinoid could keep living. This was, truly, a symbiotic relationship. The crinoid retains an extremely long stem. This highly convoluted, elliptical, stem is indicative of Platycrinites. The long stem displays many cirri (holdfast?) toward the distal end. There is also another crinoid on the plate. This is a specimen of Scytalocrinus disparilis. This crinoid is nicely preserved. It displays the cup, the long arms, and a short portion of stem. There are several Cladochonus beecheri corals on the slab. All of the fossils have great color and good contrast. They are well positioned on the large, rounded, plate of matrix. This is a very displayable crinoid plate from the Mississippian.
