This is a very fine plate of crinoids from Crawfordsville, Indiana. One of the crinoids has a starfish enclosed among the arms. The crinoid on the left is Actinocrinites gibsoni. This specimen has a long stem, a beautifully ornamented calyx, and a long anal tube. Underneath the stem, near the Actinocrinites calyx, is an example of Cyathocrinites sp. The crinoid on the right is a very nice specimen of Agaricocrinus americanus. The detail of the calyx is excellent and it has just a touch of stem present. The heavy, biserial arms are well pinnulated. Nestled among the arms, on top of the anal area, is a starfish. This starfish, Onychaster flexilis, fed on the excrement of the crinoid. In doing so, it cleaned up the environment so the crinoid could keep living. This is a nice example of a crinoid/starfish plate from Crawfordsville, Indiana.
This fossil was collected and obtained legally, and is also being sold legally.
