This is a gorgeous crinoid specimen from the world-famous Solnhofen Limestone of Germany. Fossils from this site are not common, but the degree of preservation is exquisite. This crinoid is a comatulid, a stemless, free-swimming crinoid. This specimen has been meticulously hand-prepared with sharp needles. This process takes many, many hours. However, the end result is well worth the effort. The crinoid is somewhat 3-dimensional in preservation. The long arms display the fine pinnules in breath-taking, feathery fashion. The fossil is well positioned on a large, natural, plate of matrix. The matrix plate contains some dendrites for added appeal. This is a very displayable plate of lithographic limestone that exhibits a fantastic comatulid crinoid.
