This is a huge crinoid holdfast from the Silurian of Indiana. The quarry, where this specimen was found, is now filled with water and closed to collecting. This holdfast is well preserved and exhibits fine detail. The central stem is easily seen, and the holdfast branches and branches and branches. The branching seems to go on forever, right down to the very tiny tips. The fossil has good color and contrast (better than the picture shows) and is well centered on the light-colored matrix that also contains some crinoid stem fragments, a partial trilobite cephalon, and a couple of brachiopods. This is one of the largest crinoid holdfasts we have ever seen.
