This is a very nice specimen of Platycrinites penicillus from the Mississippian of Indiana. This crinoid is quite 3-dimensional and free of matrix. The arms are intact to the very tips and display the fine pinnules. The highly ornamented plates of the cup are easily seen, and a small portion of the stem is still present. A gastropod, Platyceras sp., is tightly attached to the cup. This gastropod lived off the excrement from the crinoid, and in doing so, cleaned up the surrounding environment so the crinoid could keep living. This is a great example of a symbiotic relationship between two different organisms.
