Here is a plate of crinoids from LeGrand, Iowa. This is one of the most famous crinoid sites in the world. This specimen was found in the 1930s and recently obtained from a major crinoid collection. Crinoids from LeGrand are perhaps the most sought-after crinoids in the world. This plate contains four crinoids. The large white crinoid in the middle of the slab is Platycrinites symmetricus. This specimen displays the twisted, convoluted, stem that is typical of the genus. The plate structure of the cup is good. The biserial arms display the fine pinnules. Above the Platycrinites are two specimens of Rhodocrinus sp. Both specimens exhibit great detail. The very fine pinnulation of the arms is quite evident. Both specimens have some stem attached. The crinoid in the lower right corner is Aorocrinus immaturus. This is a beautiful specimen showing great plate structure and complete biserial arms. The crinoids are very 3-dimensionally preserved. An interesting feature about the crinoids from this site is that the different species of crinoids are different colors. These fossils have great color and contrast. This is a very displayable slab of crinoids from this classic location.
