Here is an excellent crinoid specimen from the Pennsylvanian of Illinois. The quarry where this specimen was found has been filled with water and closed to collecting for many years. Many "experts" agree that this site produced the finest Pennsylvanian crinoids in the world. There is a beautiful Stellarocrinus bilineatus displayed on the front side of the block. This unusual species of crinoid has a small cup with highly sculpted plates and stout, biserial arms. The spiked anal tube extends above the arms and a Platyceras gastropod is still tightly attached to the anal tube. This is well displayed on the other side of the block. An extremely long stem is still tightly attached to the cup. On the reverse side of the block is a great example of Brabeocrinus christinae. This crinoid has a very ornate cup and branching, uniserial arms with the individual plates arranged in a somewhat "zig-zag" pattern. A section of stem is still retained by this crinoid. The echinoderms are extremely inflated and wonderfully preserved. The pinkish-white crinoids contrast nicely with the gray matrix. They are wonderfully presented on the large, rounded block of limestone that has been sawed flat on the bottom for optimal display. This is an outstanding specimen of Pennsylvanian crinoids from a site that is now closed to collecting.
