Here is a gorgeous crinoid plate that we recently acquired from a major crinoid collection. There are two wonderful examples of Cactocrinus imperator and one small, unidentified crinoid on the slab. This specimen is from the Mississippian of Iowa. This location has been closed to collecting for a number of years - ever since someone drove their car over the wall of the quarry. Both of the large Cactocrinus are extremely 3-dimensional and exhibit superb detail. These camerate crinoids have large, stellate-plated cups and long, stout biserial arms that display fine pinnulation. Both crinoids still have a lengthy portion of stem tightly attached. The beautiful coloration of the echinoderms is totally natural. The creamish-brown crinoids contrast wonderfully with the gray matrix. They are well positioned on the somewhat rounded plate of limestone that also contains several other large crinoid stems. This is a very displayable crinoid plate from one of the most famous echinoderm sites in the Midwest.
