Here is a great example of Dorycrinus unicornis from the Mississippian of Missouri. This species of crinoid has one short, stout spine extending from the top of the tegmen. Usually this spine is missing, but this specimen has the spine intact and prepared in a free-standing position. This crinoid is extremely 3-dimensional and exhibits wonderful detail. The plate structure is clearly defined and the anal opening is easily seen. The stem attachment point and the arm attachment points are quite evident. Flanking this crinoid are two wonderful examples of Cryptoblastus melo. These melon-shaped blastoids are totally inflated and also display superb detail. The whitish-colored fossils contrast beautifully with the orangish-brown matrix. They are well positioned on the rectangular block of limestone that also contains many other crinoid fragments. This is a superb example of Dorycrinus unicornis that just happens to have two exquisite blastoids on the same plate.
