Here is a spectacular plate of crinoids that we recently obtained from a major crinoid collection. There are two crinoids on this slab. They are Phanocrinus formosus from the Mississippian strata near Anna, Illinois. This site has been closed to collecting for a number of years. This type of crinoid has a shallow, bowl-shaped cup and stout, uniserial arms. These specimens are very 3-dimensional and exhibit great detail. The plate structure of the crinoids is clearly defined. The crinoid in the center of the slab has the arms splayed and displays the fine pinnules in beautiful fashion. Both crinoids have unusually long stems tightly attached to the cups. The cream-colored crinoids contrast nicely with the yellowish matrix that is loaded with bryozoans and other fossils. The echinoderms are wonderfully positioned on the semi-rectangular plate. This is one of the most aesthetic crinoid plates that we have seen from this closed collecting site.
