Here is a very nice echinoderm plate from the Lower Burlington Formation of Missouri. In the center of the slab is an extremely large example of Cusacrinus ectypus. This rare crinoid has a large cup that is composed of many stellate plates. The tegmen has a multitude of small plates that are very protuberant - almost spiked! It is highly unusual to find this crinoid with the tegmen intact. There are also two blastoids, Cryptoblastus melo, on the plate. These melon-shaped blastoids have thin ambulacra and granulose plates. All of the echinoderms are wonderfully 3-dimensional and exhibit excellent detail. The white color of the fossils contrasts nicely with the orangish-brown matrix. They are well positioned on the rectangular block of limestone that contains many other crinoid fragments. This is a great specimen of this uncommon crinoid flanked by two blastoids.
