Here is a very nice plate of two different echinoderms from the Mississippian of Missouri. On the left side of the slab is a large Eutrochocrinus christyi. This type of crinoid has a long, flaring, smooth-plated cup and a tegmen comprised of very nodose plates. This crinoid is totally inflated and preserves fine detail. The plate structure is clearly defined and the arm attachment points are easily seen. The anal opening at the top of the tegmen is quite evident. A blastoid, Schizoblastus sayi, is positioned directly to the right of the crinoid. This 3-dimensional blastoid, a side view, shows the thin ambulacra quite nicely. The radial-deltoid sutures are easily seen. The whitish-colored fossils contrast wonderfully with the orangish matrix that contains many other crinoid fragments. They are well positioned on the semi-rectangular plate of limestone. This is a very striking specimen of echinoderms from the Upper Burlington Formation.
